Today’s BW Unpopular Opinion of the Day is in regards to the Twins deposed closer, Matt Capps:
“If Matt Capps is only going to get a deal in the neighborhood of $2 million on the free agent market, it might as well be from the Twins.”
I know Capps has garnered a lot of negative attention from the media and fans alike, but ultimately he has a career 3.51 ERA, 6.6 K/9, and 1.20 WHIP. For comparison’s sake, check out Jesse Crain prior to last season: 3.42 ERA, 6.2 K/9, and 1.26 WHIP. More or less the same exact pitcher, with the exception of perception.
The Twins need to get on board with building a bullpen on the cheap. Capps would be a terrific middle guy – especially if he can find those strikeouts again – and at $2 million per season, it’s a worthwhile gamble. If the market for Capps is inexplicably higher, then just let him walk away.
